About the name Yehudit Devorah
We chose the name Yehudit Devorah to honor David’s grandfather and Sarah’s grandmother.
Yehudit, her first name, honors David's maternal grandfather, Yehuda “Yiddle” Ed Potter, who passed away 1 month before we were married. He was an inventor, entrepreneur, philanthropist, a lifelong leader in the Jewish community of Portland Oregon, bringer together of people, and a living example of “his’tadel lih’yot ish” - “one who strives to be a leader”.
When David started becoming more observant, keeping Shabbat and Kashrut, grandpa noted how his summer camp experiences influenced him. He then said that long ago he gave an early contribution that brought that particular camp into existence. This is only one example of how he planted many seeds that are bearing fruit even today. We look forward to sharing with Yehudit Devorah every July 4 his Yiddish-English poem “The Midnight Ride of Paul Rewere”.
Devorah, her middle name, is based on Sarah’s maternal grandmother Dora. Just as the Biblical Devorah’s life represented leadership, strong will, bravery, and love her Baba taught us these qualities as well. Sarah’s clearest memories of her Baba were of the special dress that she made for her, all the times Baba babysat (and didn't make her go to bed on time, unlike other babysitters), and the time just prior to Baba’s death. Baba’s love of family, of wanting to be home, and of being strong even during difficult times remains an inspiration.
We pray that Yehudit Devorah will be just as strong and loving as David's grandpa, Yehuda, Biblical Devorah and Dora, Sarah’s Baba.
May all our lives be blessed with Simcha and love as we thank you for welcoming our daughter Yehudit Devorah into this world.
In Yehudit's room is this picture with the inside explanation based on the above speech. We hope that in this way she will feel connected to those for whom she was named.
